Dragon-type Pokémon always exude power and majesty, making them a favorite among trainers. But beyond their raw strength, they also have fascinating traits that make them exciting to use. Here’s our ranking of the top five strongest Dragon-type Pokémon!
1. Mega Rayquaza
Mega Rayquaza reigns supreme with a total base stat of 780, outclassing most Mega Evolutions and even Legendary Pokémon. What makes it even more terrifying? It doesn’t need a Mega Stone—just learning Dragon Ascent lets it Mega Evolve mid-battle. This means Rayquaza can hold other items like a Life Orb or Focus Sash, maximizing its power. Its Delta Stream ability removes its 4x weakness to Ice and Rock, making it even harder to take down. Whether it’s dishing out Extreme Speed for priority attacks or unleashing a devastating Dragon Ascent, Mega Rayquaza is a force to be reckoned with. However, it’s not completely invincible—fast Ice Beam users like Weavile or a Geomancy-boosted Xerneas can still take it down.
2. Eternatus
With a staggering base stat total of 690, Eternatus ranks among the strongest Legendary Pokémon. In the game’s story, its Eternamax form reaches a ridiculous 1125 stat total—the highest in the franchise! Sadly, that form isn’t usable in battles. Even so, Eternatus shines with its signature move, Dynamax Cannon, which deals double damage against Dynamaxed opponents, making it a nightmare for Pokémon relying on this mechanic. With high Speed and Special Attack, it can unleash Sludge Bomb, Flamethrower, and Draco Meteor, covering a wide range of threats. However, Eternatus has a major flaw—it cannot Dynamax, which limits its adaptability. Additionally, it struggles against strong Ground-type moves like Earthquake or powerful Psychic-type attacks.
3. Mega Garchomp
Mega Garchomp is an absolute powerhouse in physical damage, boasting an incredible Attack stat upon Mega Evolution. It has access to a wide movepool, including Earthquake (Ground), Dragon Claw (Dragon), Stone Edge (Rock), and Fire Blast (Fire), making it incredibly versatile. Its high HP and Defense also give it better survivability compared to its base form. However, there’s a catch—Mega Garchomp loses Speed upon Mega Evolution, which means faster opponents like Dragapult or Greninja can take it down before it strikes. Plus, being Dragon/Ground-type makes it 4x weak to Ice, so Ice Beam users remain a huge threat.
4. Black Kyurem & White Kyurem
Both Black Kyurem and White Kyurem boast an impressive 700 base stat total, with different strengths depending on their form.
- Black Kyurem holds the title of highest physical Attack among all Dragon-types, wielding Fusion Bolt and Outrage for massive damage.
- White Kyurem dominates in Special Attack, using Fusion Flare and Ice Beam to tear through enemies.
Despite their overwhelming power, their Speed is mediocre, making them vulnerable in PvP battles. Plus, their Dragon/Ice typing makes them extra susceptible to Stealth Rock, causing them to lose significant HP when entering the field.
5. Dragapult
Dragapult takes the crown for fastest Dragon-type Pokémon, ensuring it almost always strikes first. With strong Attack and Special Attack, it can be built as a physical or special attacker. Its signature move, Dragon Darts, hits twice and even bypasses Substitute, making it a great offensive tool. It also has U-turn for quick repositioning and utility moves like Will-O-Wisp and Thunder Wave to cripple opponents. However, Dragapult’s defenses are quite fragile, making it easier to knock out compared to bulkier Dragons. Additionally, Fairy-types like Clefable and Togekiss pose a serious threat to it.
